The 4:3 aspect ratio was popular in film and still is in digital sensor formats, while 3:2 is what you get when you shoot full frame and with APS-C/Super 35 sensors, while 16:9 is the standard for most digital cameras in video mode and what we see most in popular video. This diagram shows how different popular projection formats compare. ![]() The movie La La Land, for example, is shown in CinemaScope to help invoke a sense of the age it portrays – audiences, not just of a certain age, pick up on these things subconsciously and it adds something to the picture. In this digital age, filmmakers can use whatever format suits them, though there is some value in sticking to an established ratio just for familiarity and what it might mean to the audience. This is a 2.66:1 CinemaScope format image, created by using a 2x anamorphic lens while recording 4:3 full-sensor video in a Micro Four Thirds camera Hasselblad fans will recognize the CinemaScope proportions as they are approximately the same as the XPan format that lives on via the 65:24 ratio in the X1D II camera. So, popular aspect ratios these days include 2.35:1, 2.39:1 and 2.40:1, though the official standard according to the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) specifies 2.39:1 for widescreen projection.ĬinemaScope is 2.66:1 and belongs to 20th Century Fox, but there were a whole load of other formats devised by other studios that didn’t fancy paying Fox for the license to use 2.66:1. While in stills photography we tend to use whole numbers when discussing the aspect ratio of any given format, such as 3x2, 4x3, 5x4, 10x8, in anamorphic cinema these things are measured using 1 as the height of the frame. The image formats associated with anamorphic cinema are also pretty interesting in their own right and engage some different compositional properties that are genuinely useful and unique compared to those that apply to a typical still image – in the same way that panoramic formats work in still photography. The letter-box format is now synonymous with epic cinema all over the world Warranted or not, many people see using the anamorphic process as a leg-up on the way to artistic greatness. That link with the atmosphere of ‘serious’ filmmaking is why anamorphic photography is so attractive to amateur and professional filmmaker alike, as it can lift production value in the eyes of the audience (or client), and elevate the filmmaker from the throng of video-makers shooting 16:9 or 4:3 on ‘lower-end’ equipment. The long letter-box format is now synonymous with epic cinema all over the world and is a subconscious indicator for the audience that the movie they are watching has high production values. With the growing number of TVs in homes, Hollywood wanted to ensure cinema retained some unique qualities that would still make people leave their living room and part with their money to watch a movie. Anamorphic films became more popular in the early 1950s with the process re-energized to provide an exciting alternative to the almost-square format of television. The optical anamorphic process was invented during World War I to help observers in tanks get a wider view of the battleground without having to make the observation hole any larger, and the system was used on-and-off in cinema once the war was over. ![]() The image was recorded in 4K video, so it started life in the 16x9 format. ![]() This characterizes what most of us think of as anamorphic.Ī 2.35:1 format image shot using the Sirui 35mm F2.8 1.33x anamorphic lens. ![]() A common example of anamorphic imagery can be seen in the cinema, when a movie is shown in that long letterbox format that stretches across the screen. In photography, it relates to a situation in which an image is distorted as it is taken, but is then undistorted to a normal shape when it is projected or displayed. The word ‘anamorphic’ comes from the Greek words ‘ana’ and ‘morph’ which together suggest something that alters its shape but then changes back to normal again. Last time we posted about an anamorphic lens there were lots of questions about what anamorphic photography is and how it works, so we thought we’d offer a simple guide to the basics to help everyone understand what it is.

So do the gamut of engineering professionals, from those in civil engineering to mechanical, electrical, and aeronautics firms. City planning agencies, graphic design firms, interior design firms, and architectural companies use AutoCAD. Various and widespread industries have flocked to AutoCAD over the years. Users could automatically center lines, automate drawing dimensions, and copy geometric shapes. Within five years, AutoCAD was the worldwide leader in computer-aided drafting programs. In the beginning, AutoCAD was strictly a 2D drawing program, and very good at it.īecause of its precision, experienced engineers and beginners fell in love with this new program. These include T-squares, compasses, and rulers. The ease-of-use toolbox offers a variety of drafting instruments to make technical drawings. ![]() When users open this computer-aided design program, the user interface makes it look like they are sitting down at a drafting table. That was a novel CAD software idea back in the day because before AutoCAD any commercially viable CAD program ran on bigger minicomputers or mainframes. Originally, it was a desktop application that ran on microcomputers with internal graphics cards of both Microsoft and Apple PCs. What is AutoCAD?Īlmost 40 years ago (December 1982) Autodesk introduced one of the most advanced computer-aided drafting programs for the growing personal computer market. In this article, we will look at AutoCAD vs SketchUp in-depth, tell you their similarities and differences, and how to select the best one for you. Two of the most notable CAD programs are AutoCAD and SketchUp. Instead of piles of blueprints rolled up in a corner bin, CAD programs architects and engineers can now digitally save their workflow in incremental steps as each project nears completion. Computer-aided design takes the drafting table out of your office and replaces it with a personal computer program that automates all the same processes. ![]() This is an unofficial application not associated with Viki Inc. I don’t know how he’s able to take it.’”Īnother challenge was going up against Babyface, who is a contemporary, an influence and also, due to his own pop hits as well as ones with artists like Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston and Mary J. “That was what I loved about it, because to be cyber-roasted ,” he says. “I’ve got a thick skin - I rolled with the memes” that surfaced after his technical issues. Indeed, Riley’s strong will came through, even in a social media setting. “Timbaland and Swizz were like, ‘Dag, how’d you turn that around?,’” he laughs. “I felt like I was doing my first concert,” he says, adding, “Also, I was nervous because I was on a lot of people’s bad side,” citing an Instagram poll that showed he was disliked by 71% of voters before the first battle on Saturday night, largely due to technical issues - but by the following day his approval rating soared to 91%. His reintroduction to America’s musical consciousness was daunting. Even though Riley is widely recognized as the inventor of New Jack Swing in the late ‘80s via artists such as Guy, Keith Sweat, Heavy D and the Boys - and he’d later produce Michael Jackson - he’d been off the mainstream radar for a minute. Trajan Pro was the initial OpenType version, which added central European language support and added small caps in the lowercase slots. Twombly retired from Adobe and type design in 1999, but Adobe has continued to release versions in consultation with her. A bold weight was added to Trajan when it was made digital. Twombly's digitisation of Trajan has become very popular, as seen in its widespread presence on movie posters, television shows, and book covers. Trajan was designed for display instead of printed text – specifically for use in large sizes. Alastair Johnston's 1990 review of Trajan noted this heritage, saying that it "outdoes anything old Fred Goudy ever produced." Many other examples of lettering and typefaces are based on Roman capitals, for instance lettering made under the influence of the Arts and Crafts movement in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many looser interpretations (often with an invented lowercase) predate Twombly's, particularly Emil Rudolf Weiss' "Weiss" of 1926, Frederic Goudy's Forum Title, Hadriano and "Goudy Trajan", and Diotima by Gudrun Zapf-von Hesse, while Warren Chappell's "Trajanus" of 1939, while having similar forms for capitals has a markedly medieval lowercase. Twombly's translation of the Trajan inscription into type is quite crisp and faithful. They are the best forms for the grandest and most important inscriptions." Trajan letterforms were used for many years for signs in British public buildings, including government offices. ![]() The calligrapher and type designer Edward Johnston in his book Writing & Illuminating & Lettering (1906) wrote that "the Roman capitals have held the supreme place among letters for readableness and beauty.
